Breaking News: The 4th of July comes early this year! Well not exactly. The 4th arrives right on schedule, but the crackling desire for personal independence and liberation blows in a few days earlier as we gear up for a bit of fireworks as the Sun in Cancer opposes Pluto in Capricorn on Monday and squares Uranus in Aries very late on Wednesday night. Is it a coincidence it happens the same week the US celebrates the anniversary of independence? Hmmm….I wonder. Is that the theme from the Twilight Zone I hear playing in my head?
Astrologically speaking the Sun, which represent our sense of personal identity, cruises pretty quickly around the cosmos, moving through one sign in 30 days. We should find this comforting as the demanding connections this week are relatively short lived. However, in the same way an insightful 'aha' can change your life; this energy is persuasive and certainly has the same life-altering potential.
The rumbling begins on Monday evening as the Sun opposes Pluto. The most personal planet associated with ego is matched up with the heavyweight planet of transformation. We might feel circumstances way beyond our control are nevertheless both influencing and guiding our lives. We may not be able to control the waves of the ocean, but we can decide if we are going to hoist a sail and grab the wind, or alternately maintain a lower profile to minimize the drama.
On Wednesday evening, close to midnight Pacific Time, the Sun locks into a square with Uranus, the planet that breaks all the rules and is the poster child for revolution. This is especially true in the cardinal sign of Aries that exalts the pioneering spirit of the individual. What's a Sun in the sensitive family-loving sign of Cancer to do?
Like the Full Moon in Capricorn less than two weeks ago, these solar aspects highlight the need to more clearly define and express our needs as unique individuals while simultaneously considering our contribution to the family, group, team, community, country, world and universe. It's not ever an either / or proposition. To be successful and happy, we do both; although many times it seems next to impossible to do justice with equal intention and satisfaction.
Truthfully, these aspects will probably feel personally taxing. Whenever planets make difficult aspects to the Sun, life often presents situations requiring we stretch ourselves in new directions. It's wise to pause for self-reflection but avoid letting your thoughts slip into avoidance or denial of issues that come into your consciousness. A time-out to reconsider and get a new perspective is well advised especially since we are also in the midst of a Mercury retrograde cycle.
One aspect of enlightenment must be when we finally realize on an experiential level the obstacles we face in life come from within; and external circumstances are merely reflections. That's a good lesson to keep in mind this week. The planets don't 'do' anything to us; neither do other people. Every experience of 'out there' is a reflection of what's 'in here'. Take every opportunity to see the connection.
In this week of celebrations of freedom, liberty and justice for all, declare you own personal independence. See yourself more clearly; qualities and quirks alike. Celebrate you and celebrate your tribe – whoever they may be.
Get ready for a day of 'inconvenient truths' with three relatively demanding aspects between planets. Venus – associated with what we value, and therefore a proxy for desire, love and money – is transiting through dramatic and self-expressive Leo. She's the princess and is feeling pretty deserving about now. Today she moves into a scratchy square with disciplined Saturn in willful Scorpio and a fuzzy connection with dreamy Neptune. Complicating the picture is the Sun's opposition to transformational Pluto. Collectively there are thousands of possible scenarios but all require some level of honest self-examination especially when it comes to love, relationships, expenditures, and consumption of resources.
Forget about the wailing and gnashing of teeth; it's not that serious. But truly, a bit of self-reflection with a healthy dose of openness and willingness to tell the truth (especially to ourselves) will help set priorities straight. The Moon in impulsive Aries comes out swinging if backed into a corner, so make an extra effort to stay receptive and objective. Don't be afraid to defend your boundaries, but take a second look if you believe you are being attacked. The energy is rather provocative today so do whatever it takes to just….chill. In mid-afternoon the Moon moves into peace-loving and stable Taurus. Make some peace offerings where indicated.

TUESDAY JULY 2 MOON in TAURUS
Yesterday may have stirred up some issues, but today with clearer heads and softer energy the Moon in Taurus finds reasonable accommodation in a communication with Pluto and an alignment with the Sun. Perhaps we have come to a new understanding of concepts like wealth, abundance and prosperity. Maybe we have more clarity on the difference between material security and the driving insecurity that fuels greed. Whatever personal insights we come to, today feels hopeful and we find more reason to be content.
Daily Muse: One cannot build life from refrigerators, politics, credit statements and crossword puzzles. That is impossible. Nor can one exist for any length of time without poetry, without color, without love. (Antoine De Saint-Exupery)
Today on Simpletales my guest Anita Ahuja helps me explore the energy of July through messages from the angels and ascended masters. Please join us for the fireworks on 12Radio.com at 11am Pacific – 2 Eastern.
WEDNESDAY JULY 3 MOON in TAURUS
Moon Void of Course 8:51 am (PDT) – 2:22 am Thursday morning
This is not officially the US Independence Day but personally we are going to be demanding a new level of freedom and autonomy as the energy builds as the Sun moves into an exact 90 degree square with Uranus late tonight. We may feel like things in our life from clothes to homes, to jobs, to relationships feel too tight, too constricting, or just not a good fit. Uranus is the planet of awakening and today, we may 'wake up' to a situation or circumstance we want to change. Throw out that old idea of 'no gain without pain'. Suffering is optional! Regardless of how we got into the situation, now is the time to look for constructive solutions. On a very practical level beware of misguided or reckless behavior.
Daily Muse: 'The rules!' shouted Ralph, 'you're breaking the rules!'
'Who cares?' (William Golding, Lord of the Flies)
THURSDAY JULY 4
MOON in TAURUS/GEMINI
Moon enters Gemini 2:22 am (PDT)
As the Moon glides into fluid Gemini the experiences of the last several days come into clearer focus. Or maybe we just become a bit more philosophical. Gemini is a light-hearted sign that can dance from one extreme to the other and enjoy every step and distraction along the way. A lunar square to slippery Neptune adds a touch of imagination and maybe confusion to the day, but the evening promises to be sweeter and maybe even romantic as the Moon aligns with Venus. Make your own fireworks tonight!
Daily Muse: I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity. (Gilda Radner)
FRIDAY JULY 5 MOON IN GEMINI
We may not truly appreciate the flexibility and versatility of Gemini, but today, we all benefit from the Moon's transit through this very adaptable sign. The rest of the cosmic dance is in somewhat of an uproar. Venus is squabbling with her soul-mate Mars; or is she really flirting? It's hard to tell sometimes. That attractive man at the coffee shop, is he teasing, testing, trying to win a bet with his friends or genuinely interested? Thinking and conversations are even more confusing than usual as retrograding Mercury backs into a disorienting connection to Neptune. But there is a fine line between brilliance and madness. Which is it today? And then there's that darn grating connection between Venus and Pluto – is it pointing out a necessary truth or just throwing a curve ball into our relationships and self-esteem?
Thank you Gemini Moon for helping our hearts and emotions dance with the changing tempo! But in true Mercury retrograde style, I've somewhat tricked you, chronologically that is, and saved the best for last even though it occurs very early in the morning, even before most of us get out bed. Mars the planet of action makes a magical and enlightening connection with Uranus. So dance we will! Although I don't believe for one minute the Fred Astaire quote below, I appreciate the sense of whimsy and confidence. That's what we need today a sense of being in the moment and doing what comes naturally without a lot of thinking and judgment. Put your feet in the air and see where they take you.
Daily Muse: I just put my feet in the air and move them around. (Fred Astaire)
SATURDAY JULY 6 MOON in GEMINI/CANCER
Moon Void of Course 5:30 am (PDT) – 3:14 pm
A lunar connection with Mars jumpstarts our day, but don't be surprised if energy seems a bit low key today. We are in the last few days of the lunar cycle when we emotionally are wrapping things up. When the Moon heads for security-conscious Cancer in mid-afternoon, family and home probably look a whole lot better than the company of strangers in the shopping mall. Besides, Cancer tends to be cautious with money. If you are spending, it's likely to be on home and family and on items you believe will increase your sense of security. If you are laying heavy emotional expectations on material possessions, or trying to 'buy' someone's approval or love, take a step back and think about it.
Daily Muse: What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family. (Mother Teresa)
SUNDAY JULY 7 MOON in CANCER
Saturn stations direct 4 Scorpio 10:12 pm (PDT)
'Finally!' we exclaim, Venus gets a well deserved break today as she aligns with avant-garde Uranus. This potentially kinky openness to amorous adventures is in contrast to the cautiousness of the Moon in Cancer. But frankly we can use the freshness that accompanies this pairing. Especially since the Moon will oppose Pluto at mid-day attracting a few clouds of doubt or misunderstanding. It's hard to be mired in traditions with the Venus Uranus connection especially since the Moon also aligns with Uranus in early evening. This is the opportunity to be open to new experiences and people, and challenge some of our closely held but potentially stale habits and ways of being.
Saturn the planet of organization and structure ends a retrograde cycle tonight. This is a positive sign for taking projects from the planning stage into manifestation.
Daily Muse: Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city. (George Burns)

I can't remember the last time I've noticed such excitement surrounding a retrograde. Let me rephrase my statement to say that I've never seen so much fear. To be sure, any time Mercury goes retrograde, there's an immense amount of trepidation as to how its energies will unfold and affect us on a personal level.
I'm not one to dismiss this and know it to be a very real occurrence, but I'm also not one to give into the fears and superstitions that surround this astronomical and astrological phenomenon.
For those of you who don't know, Mercury appears to move backwards in the sky, in relation to the stars behind it, about 3 times a year. This lasts for about 3 weeks, then it moves forward again. We call this the Mercury Retrograde. This one started on June 26th and will end July 20th.
It's been one of the hottest topics in astrology over the millennia, so I might as well blow on the coals a little.
As I said, I'm a believer. That being said, I'd like to address a few of the more popular ideas and superstitions of the retrograde and attempt to alleviate some of the fears that make people miserable.
First of all, it may help to define some of the things that Mercury rules over. Mercury rules over the mind, speech, writing, education, math, astrology, gardening and lots of other things as well. We can also find fish, money, curiosity, electronics, thieves, children, cities, religious buildings, deceit and lots of other things where Mercury is concerned.
Let's move on.
This retrograde is taking place in Cancer in the Western system. Those of you who have studied some astrology know that Cancer rules deep emotions, our parents, our homes and our sense of comfort. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, so let's get a feel for some of what the Moon rules.
Like Mercury, the Moon rules over the mind, although we might call it more the emotional than the intellectual mind. Either way, the Moon in a chart is often directly responsible for our happiness, or lack thereof.
As Mercury is moving backwards in the sign ruled by the Moon, Cancer, it'll affect us on different levels, many of those emotional.
I suggest looking to whatever house Cancer represents in your chart. For example, if Cancer is your seventh house, you could experience bubbles in relationships or in travel. If Cancer is your 10th house, then you'll probably experience influences of the Mercury Retrograde in your career. If Cancer is your ascendant, then you may feel intense energies on a personal level. This is the general idea.
Unfortunately, there's no hard and fast rule on how these energies will affect you but let's look at some basic concepts to guide you through happily and with a sense of humor.
According to common belief, there's an entire list of things that you shouldn't do under the Mercury Retrograde. For example, some people won't start a new project or take a new job, even if they desperately need employment. Others will never buy a car or file a lawsuit. There are those who won't go on a first date and some who refuse to travel. Others believe that people are angrier under the retrograde and drivers are terrible.
Drivers are terrible 365 days a year and people are angry just as often. Computers break down every day, whether or not it's a retrograde. Washing machines break down, communications get garbled, and things go wrong every day of the year. Please remember, I'm not saying that Mercury doesn't have an effect, but I am saying that a lot of the normal bits of life that go on are often attributed to it.
Have I experienced the misery of a Mercury Retrograde personally? You're darn tootin' I have.
Here are 5 simple things you can do in order to make this retrograde work for you.
1. Journal. I often urge you to write down your thoughts and record what's on you mind, but more so during a retrograde. Since this event is occurring in Cancer, it's a powerful time to deal with any issues you may have regarding your parents. Remember, this is an internal process and not one to necessarily be resolved with them in reality. Make it about you. You'll probably have lots of "Aha," moments.
Change your behavior. This is an excellent time to rid yourself of bad habits because Mercury Retrograde gives us a good look inside of ourselves, if we pay attention. You'll also have the ability to make those changes stick.
3. Trust your intuition. This is a great time not to be fooled by others. You should notice that you see through the veneer of what people are telling you. The good news is that this talent will stay with you. I view every retrograde as an opportunity to see through the smokescreen put in front of me, and each time it gets a little bit better. Use this to your advantage. By the way, don't watch a magic show unless you want to figure out the secrets.
4. Find new interests. It doesn't matter how obscure that interest is. In fact, sometimes it's better if it's eccentric. If you've been wanting to learn to juggle, do so now. If you wanted to learn to play the musical saw, buy some earplugs and give it a go. This is the time to engage your mind. Believe me, under a Mercury Retrograde, a mind that's bored is a mind itching for trouble.
5. Think spiritually. When it comes to spiritual pursuits, a Mercury Retrograde is one of the best times to learn and develop metaphysical talents. Do some crystal gazing. Play with psychometry and feel the energies. You may find that you can see auras better over the next 3 weeks. Anything you learn now, should stick with you like overcooked oatmeal.
The only warning I'll offer concerning the retrograde is to be extra aware of what's going on around you. Since Mercury is symbolically turned inward, we may not pay as much attention to the outer world as we usually do. Our senses and attention to outside influences may be less attuned. Because of this, it's vital to be as conscious as possible in every facet of life during a retrograde. You can bet a Mercury Dime that others aren't watching what they're doing, so it's only sensical for you to be extra vigilant.
Oh yes. I almost forgot. Watch the Three Stooges during the retrograde. You'll be astounded at how much sense they make. (They always make sense to me, but then, well, you know.)
Until next week; stay happy!
PROGRAM NOTE: Out of Mo's Mind, Wednesday, July 3, 2013, 9 AM, PDT. LIVE! I don't have a topic yet, but this is hell week for animals. Millions of dollars worth of pop-bottle-rockets, firecrackers and other fire hazards will be ignited, terrifying thousands of animals nationwide. If you have animals in your life, you know what this does to them. If you don't, please think it over before you set anything off. How about this, instead of buying a hundred dollars worth of fireworks, why not donate that money to your local no-kill shelter? I'm sure the founders would approve.
I read auras, and I see everyone's energy body projecting out into the world what is going on inside. So I ask you, what are you projecting? Did you know that your energy and the thoughts and words you use project out onto your world, impacting everything around you? Well it's true; your energy body has an impact on all of the energy bodies around you, creating a domino effect. Here is an example of how this works. Say you're having a great day, all feels right with the world. Then you walk into a store and are waited on by a clerk who is projecting anxiety. Unknowingly you pick up on their projection and walk out of the store feeling anxious for no particular reason. At this point you have a choice. You can take on the anxiety as your own and let it impact your whole day. If you do this then you are projecting anxiety and those around you may pick it up as well. At the end of your day you may have noticed that everyone around you seems anxious. What a coincidence! Ok, on to your other choice. You can acknowledge that you feel anxious and then ask yourself, is this mine? If the answer is no then you can recognize the anxiety for what it is, the signature of someone else's energy and let it go. You go about your day in a happy go lucky mood and note at the end of your day that those around you seem particularly happy. What a coincidence!
Our energy bodies are so powerful! Most of the time we are completely unaware of what we are projecting, but we can actually control our energy if we choose. You can start by simply asking yourself "What am I projecting?" If you don't like the answer then change the energetic channel! Intentionally become more aware of your energy projections and identify what is yours and what belongs to someone else. We have a choice about how we react to all kinds if things, but often do not take the wheel and intentionally choose.
Every morning ask yourself, what do I want to project today? Ask yourself what color your projection should be, what qualities would you like your energy to have? One you have arranged your projection then share it with those around you. Make note of how others seem to sync up with your projection and how exponentially you can impact the world simply by choosing to project positive and loving energy throughout your day.
