I've received a lot of e-mail lately from students of the mysteries seeking advice on how to get started, or what books they should read in order to round out their metaphysical knowledge. I've also been asked if I'm going to start a class on general metaphysics. I'm working on it. But, until then, I thought I'd offer what I consider to be a solid reading list to get you going.
The following books aren't listed in any particular order. I keep each of these, as well as others, at arm's length in order to reference and cross-reference ideas that pop in and out of my head. You may not find that every book is for you, but since I've been asked, here you are.
Before I proceed, let me offer this bit of truth; nothing comes easily. One of the main complaints I hear from seekers is that the knowledge doesn't come quickly enough, or that it's as clear as mud. I've been studying these subjects for most of my life with a dogged enthusiasm that has, at times, left me dejected, angry, confused and misled. I suppose being as obsessed with the subject as I am has its good and bad points, but it's incredibly worthwhile. These books may not change your life as they have mine. Then again, they may be pivotal to your journey. Each book I've suggested has been instrumental in my understanding, and I hope you'll get something out of them too. We truly do stand on the shoulders of giants.
The Book of Thoth, by Aleister Crowley
I've read this book no less than three times a year since the mid 1970's. It doesn't matter whether or not you study the Thoth Tarot deck. If you're a fan of Tarot in any way shape or form, then I believe that this is a book that you should have.
The old man didn't make it easy on us, that's for sure. It's not simple to understand. In fact, it's designed to be obscure in order to spur the student to further studies. There isn't another book on the Thoth Tarot that I can recommend. I don't like any of them, and there are quite a few. Who knows? Maybe I'll finish mine one of these days.
No matter what you think of Aleister Crowley, the man, he was a brilliant metaphysician.
If you read this book, don't expect to understand everything. Just read. You'll get more out of it than you think.
777, by Aleister Crowley
More of a reference source to those of us obsessed by metaphysical numbers, this book does offer an amazing introduction to Gematria, or Qabalistic Numerology. The first few chapters are worth the price of the book. The latter chapters will become a part of your daily life, in time.
The Golden Dawn, by Israel Regardie
The Golden Dawn was the most influential magical order of its time. It featured luminaries from Victorian society and went on to become directly responsible for other orders and much of what we consider to be modern pagan ritual. This book is the collection of The Golden Dawn's philosophy, teachings and rituals. Its emphasis is on information and knowledge, although it does provide the actual rituals as used by the order.
It's important to remember that ritual is meant to be done in the mind. It's also important to remember that very little ritual is necessary. This book is worth its weight in Alchemical gold. I advise a copy that has an index.
The Secret Teachings of All Ages, by Manly P. Hall
This delightful book is filled with some of the most amazing information you'll ever read. Hall gives us a view of what's important and what isn't when it comes to the study of metaphysics. He delivers everything from Djinni and Alchemy to Secret Rosicrucian Codes and just about everything in between. It's a beautifully illustrated book and has come out in paperback. If you have the opportunity to find one of the older copies with full-color plates, I suggest trying to snag it. This book is great fun for casual reading, but is still extremely informative and a lovely way to learn more about our art.
The I-Ching or book of changes by Richard Wilhelm, Translated by Cary Baynes
I first met the the I-Ching in 1968. I've been working with, and studying it, ever since. I like the Wilhelm/Baynes version because Richard Wilhelm absolutely understood, delivered and commented upon the content of the I-Ching without weighing it down with "superior" Western judgements.
As an oracle, I-Ching is powerful, clear and friendly. It does take a bit of practice to know how to use it properly but once discovered, it will never cease to answer any and every question you may have.
More importantly, the I-Ching is filled with pertinent advice on how to live life and what this journey is about. It's an encyclopedia of wisdom that's hard to match anywhere else. Not bad for a book 5000 years old.
Make sure to read the introduction by Carl Jung.
Holy books
You may be surprised at this, but I suggest you read as many holy books as you can, and I mean all you can find. We live in a world that's dominated by religion, in one form or another, so it's in our best interest to understand where and what we believe and why we believe what we do. Also, much of modern metaphysical thought was encoded in "acceptable" religious clothing. The more you know, the better off you'll be.
There are dozens of other books I'd like to include here, but this seems like a good enough start. Astrology, Runes, Qabalah and other subjects haven't even been tackled. There are also novels that cut to the core to what it means to be a creature in the world of nature, defining humanity in contrast to being human. Moby Dick is such a novel, as is Frankenstein. But that's a topic for another day.
So, keep reading and expect to work. If it came easily, how boring would that be?
Until next week, I wish you peace, love and wonderful obsessions.
Program Note: Out of Mo's Mind, will air on Wednesday, August the 7th, 2013 at 9 AM, Pacific Daylight Time. I actually know exactly what I'm going to discuss this week. This has caused some sort of rift in the Space Time Continuum, one I'm a bit concerned about. In fact, I think it may be risky to actually mention my topic, as I could pull an ethereal muscle, leading to intense cramping on some plane. Instead, I'll simply say, LIVE! Ow! Did you feel that?
Class Note: My last class on Developing Inner Vision will take place on Wednesday, August 7 at 4 PM, Pacific time. This class will focus on how to manifest change with the inner eye. Click here to register.

On The Way
Angel en route to a place of entertainment. Her seahorse is a good friend with a good listening ear. The riding collar she has for him reflects her love of him with the pink glass beaded hearts shapes. Butterfly in foreground, a metaphor for transformation. See if you can find some unusual entertainment to attend over the next week. It may be a place where you are able to dress up more than usual. Bring a favorite friend and share your experience. Think of how you can make all of your friends a favorite, it may be that they have something special other than a a good listening ear. Find their forte and over time get together with each of them from a unique appreciation perspective to see if you can enjoy them even more. Perhaps if you are lifting their lives, by reflecting their high points back to them, they too will lift yours even more. Transforming to a more loving, giving, and receiving place in life is the perfect item for any to-do list.
